The Fairfax Lectern -- Why We Are Successful

Superior Curriculum Development

Thorough research is foremost in determining course content. We analyze thousands of past exam questions to identify the student skills being tested. We watch for trends, new question-types and changes in level of difficulty -- we apply appropriate syntax, format, tone and style to question creation. We have learned to balance the amount of in-class instruction and home practice with the nature and complexity of each question-type. In designing this material, we employ research from five years of past exams to ensure that all our questions are reflective of the actual exam.

All of our writers are experienced college faculty. Because teaching complements our writing, we understand how students learn and how to write test preparation material for maximum results. We continue to use an extensive evaluation procedure whereby students and instructors provide evaluations after every course and their comments are incorporated into the newest editions.

Effective Classroom Technique

Our classroom technique has proven effective in ensuring student success. Via diagnostic testing, we assess students' ability and enable them to gain familiarity with differing test sections. Our program instruction is goal-oriented. Each question is designed to mimic questions on the actual exam, in both level of difficulty and question-type. Instructor lectures ensure that students understand the exact nature of each question-type, and will teach students how to dissect and understand a variety of question structures. We encourage students to use problem-solving techniques for different questions so that they can see how the questions are formulated. Understanding the test maker is imperative in scoring well on the exam.

Comprehensive instructor manuals coach instructors to better their performance. Exercises and reinforcement simulate the actual test taking experience. Every course day is scripted for the teacher. We have even included answers to anticipated questions and "Tips and Tricks" about test taking. Our goal is to ensure that students experience no surprises on the actual exam.

Our in-class materials are also supplemented by Home Study student books that build on the concepts and strategies presented in class and reinforce learning. Thus, practice, practice, practice is the theme right up to the exam.
